Karmic Lessons of the Lunar Nodes

Lunar nodes are often associated with our karma and destiny. Why is that?

They point to the themes and tasks we are meant to address in this life, and give us clues regarding long-term life goals.

Representing the intersection points of the Moon's orbit and the ecliptic (the projection of the Earth's equatorial plane onto the celestial sphere), Lunar Nodes, unlike planets, do not possess physical characteristics; they are fictitious points, invisible in the sky.

With the help of Lunar Nodes, we have the opportunity to connect with the Subtle World and analyze the development of our Soul. 

In astrology, there are two lunar nodes:

• North Node (Rahu);
• South Node (Ketu).

The nodes were widely known in astrological cultures from China to Greece, as calculations of the position of the lunar nodes and their cycles allowed for the prediction of future eclipses.

In the natal chart, the lunar nodes define the program of our personal development. 

Like road signs, they show the direction of movement in space and time.

By analyzing the signs and houses in which the Lunar Nodes are located, we can understand the direction we need to take in life.

• Ascending – North Node (Rahu) – symbolizes our future and tells us about the life task we must fulfill;
• Descending – South Node – symbolizes our past and accumulated experience, which is necessary in the future for development along the North Node.

Movement of the Lunar Nodes

It moves in the opposite direction to the signs of the Zodiac and the movement of the planets, i.e., retrograde. The speed of movement is about 3 minutes per day, as a result of which the Lunar Nodes stay in one Zodiac sign for approximately 2.5 years.

• The Lunar Node cycle is 18.5 years, the opposition phase is 9.5 years.

The return of the Lunar Nodes is a test of our life's "authenticity"—how successfully we acquire new experiences, what we have learned, and what needs to be repeated.

The opposition phase is a test of assimilation of new experience, a period of changes and adjustments.

The time of the Lunar Nodes' return occurs:

• at 18-19 years old, when life is full of new hopes and challenges. We begin to build an independent life and are ready for the challenges of reality.
• at 37-38 years old. The second return is the most interesting. We are at the beginning of a midlife crisis, but we are already summing up and feel a certain degree of dissatisfaction. The main question: "Is this all I can achieve?";
• at 56-57 years old. The third cycle almost coincides with the return of Saturn, and we increasingly ask ourselves about our purpose and our value in this world. This is an active conscious age when we are still ready to try new directions;
• at 75-76 years old. The fourth cycle will tell us about the accumulated experience and how we can pass it on to our children.

Let's assume that your North Lunar Node is in the sign of Aries at the moment of your birth. After 18.5 years of your life's journey, the North Lunar Node will return to the sign of Aries. This can be a period when you begin to show more initiative and become more ambitious in achieving your goals. Your karmic destiny may be related to actions and the manifestation of leadership qualities.

It is interesting to note that success is not determined by financial indicators or social status. It is about something else: about the steps we try to take to accumulate new experiences for the Soul.

By not working with the programs of the Lunar Nodes, we encounter rather harsh situations on the event level. And then, through crisis and trials, we are brought back to our embodiment program.

By observing the principle of balance and taking into account our past experience, based on the analysis of the South Node, we will be able to move more confidently into the future set by the North Node.

South Node

It points to areas that we find familiar and even comfortable, but they may still hold karmic lessons for us. This is how the South Node helps us understand what we need to release and where to free ourselves from past obligations and limitations.

It is an accumulator of experience and forms our foundation. The energies of the South Node are understandable to us, and we gladly use them in everyday life.

As a rule, a person lives according to the South Node program until the 2nd return of the Lunar Nodes at 37-38 years old.

North Node

It is associated with our desires, ambitions, and needs in this life, as it points to areas of life where we strive for growth and development.

The North Node is also linked to karmic challenges and tasks that we are meant to resolve.

It represents something unfamiliar to us, but we intuitively sense its direction. After 37-38 years, on the eve of a midlife crisis, we begin to ponder the meaning of life and our true direction, rather than the one dictated by parents and society.

Periods when lunar nodes are activated by transits can be associated with significant events and turning points in your life.

Doubts in career choice

We often face a dilemma of choice: should we decide in favor of a field that is already familiar to us, or should we develop new skills?

As a rule, people choose a profession based on the qualities of the South Node sign, as we easily use the qualities and energies already developed in past incarnations. But these eventually become depleted, leading us to feel dissatisfied with our lives.

The North Node, with the help of its sign, helps us discover new qualities, see the prospect of opportunities, and create a new reality. Initially, this is uncomfortable and unclear, however, over time, we are attracted by the new direction and life becomes more harmonious.

Interestingly, our environment is capable of seeing the direction of the North Lunar Node, of "reading" it. However, it is quite difficult for us to do this ourselves, as it requires stepping out of our comfort zone as defined by the South Node.

When a person asks themselves: "Why is this happening to me?" or "What is this event for?", it is an appeal to the analysis of the Lunar Nodes and our understanding of these energies.
